Reading To Children
by Elizabeth Hamilton, M.Ed.
- Children are never too young nor too old to be read
to aloud. Reading provides time together, builds attention
span and fosters the development of vocabulary.
- Help your children read smoothly by telling them the
words they don't know so that they can move along and
maintain interest in the story. You can help them in figure
out the harder words later.
- Build you children's confidence and increase their
understanding of what they have read by having them read aloud to you.
- Have your children tell you about a story they have read.
- Provide a wide variety of reading material in your
home by having books, magazines and newspapers readily available.
- Show children that reading is a source of pleasure
and information. Its more effective for your children to
see you reading often than it is for you to tell them to read.
- Give your children books as birthday or holiday gifts.
Children who have books they can call their own are more
motivated toward reading.
- Take your children to the public library and help
them get their own library cards.
- Ask the librarian to suggest good books to suit your
children's ages and interests. Then help them select their own books.
- Encourage your children to borrow books and other
material from the school library.
