Reinforce Learning
by Elizabeth Hamilton, M.Ed.
Here are some simple ideas that you can do at home to
help your child become a more successful learner.
Reinforce Learning
- Be patient with your children. Learning cannot take
place in a tense environment.
- Don't despair if your children make the same
mistakes over and over again even though you've shown
them how to do it correctly many times. Some some experts
say that learning sometimes requires more than 15 repetitions
before it is absorbed.
- Set the stage for good homework habits by providing
a quiet, well lighted place for study.
- Make sure study material such as reference books,
dictionaries, paper, pens, and pencils are readily available.
- Schedule home study on a regular basis. To succeed
in school many children need a regular study time each
night free of interruptions and distractions.
- If your children are not given homework assignments,
scheduled study time can be used for review, reading
for pleasure, or some type of family or learning activity.
- Provide your children with a notebook so that they
and you will know what school assignments they have.
This notebook will be a written record of all assignments
they've had and can be used in the review and study of
previous material.
- Monitor your children's progress by asking them
about their latest test grades, how they are doing in
school and what they find interesting.
- If you find out that your child is having academic or
other problems in school, don't wait to be contacted by
the teacher. Take the initiative by making an appointment
to talk it over with the teacher. If you can't get to school,
send a note asking the teacher to contact you by telephone.
- Set high expectations about school and education.
- Make sure that your child's attendance is excellent.
If your child is absent frequently she looses out on
important information and the presentation of new material.
- Talk to your children about school and encourage
them to have a positive attitude about it.
- Let them know how important and valuable you think
school is. Children are more likely to succeed if they
view school as a worthwhile experience.
- Show an interest in your child's education by participating
in their school activities.
- Encourage children to always do their best.
