EP Caps For Kids

You Did It!!

EP CAPS 4 Kids doubled their goal
in the first year!

See what we have in mind for 2002!
New photos near bottom of page

EPCaps4Kids was formed February 21, 2001. It is sponsored by Joan Bramsch, founder of EmpoweredParent.com, and coordinated by Marcie Hoye Cumberland.

Working through Internet groups, neighbors, Senior Centers, and Youth groups, Craft and hobby clubs, local yarn shops, and manufacturers, our goal is to provide warm winter hats to children in need. We ask you to knit, crochet, purchase, or gather Caps 4 Kids to be distributed through area or local charitable organizations next Winter. How many hats will you donate?

Our group numbered only 16 on-line members in 2001, but many others chose to join our effort and we were able to provide almost 1,000 caps to needy children in our first seven months.

We want to add to that number this year
and distribute 10,000 hats!!

Where Do The Hats Go?

Once you have made 2, 20, or ? hats you have two options:
  1. Send them to our EPCaps4Kids Volunteer Regional Collector in your part of the country. She knows of places where the need is greatest. or

  2. Donate them personally in your own community and let us know how many went where so we can keep a running tally.
Feel free to send photos (jpg, bmp, or gif format, please) of folks receiving the hats, or parents/grandparents and children/grandchildren making the hats to webmamma Sara and put Caps4Kids in the subject line. No one will be identified by full name.

EP Parents are encouraged to share their knitting or crocheting skills with their children over the coming months. Learning to knit or crochet is also an excellent perceptual motor exercise and is helpful for boys, as well as, girls. By sharing this project with them, you will also teach your children the goodness of giving. Peer to Peer giving. A parent’s time given patiently to the child as s/he learns a new skill is a Priceless Gift.

Thank you with all our hearts,
Love,
Marcie and Joan :)

EXCITING NEWS!

An EP parent writes:

My Little Sister, Lori, who has an almost lethal aversion to the Internet if it's not for her work and therefore won't ever join a list and rarely gets around to her email, was one of the very first people I contacted about EP Caps4Kids. She is a volunteer co-ordinator near Tacoma, Washington.

When Lori likes an idea she just goes ahead and does it. She just doesn't always get back to you to say she's on the task. LOL. Today she decided to tell me what she did.

Says Lori:

Just so you know, I participated in your collect hats program but then distributed them to 600 persons living on the streets of Tacoma rather than sending them elsewhere....

I sent the info to as many of my volunteer coordinator colleagues as possible and put a volunteer in charge of collection. I guess that I didn't realize the we were supposed to wait until November to distribute. We started in September as part of the back to school efforts. The caps and some gloves came from many venues across Tacoma, Lakewood and Puyallup.

600 HATS!!!!!

And it's been chilly up in Washington for the past couple of weeks!

This is one of those times having a little sister is a real blessing!!

Way to go Lori!!

Junior High's Get Busy

Our junior high (grades 7 through 9) school puts up a Christmas tree in the front foyer which is decorated with mittens, gloves and hats donated by staff and students. These are then donated to an inner city school.

Admission to all our school dances is $5 or $4 plus a donation to the local food bank. Almost every student chooses the food bank option so every six weeks or so they donate 6 or 7 boxes of food to the food bank.

Our Leadership students spend a few afternoons before Christmas helping the local Kinettes (service group) pack hampers and wrap gifts.

Sincerely,
Maureen
